A Rich History of Lent
Spanning approximately 40 days (excluding Sundays), Lent has been observed by Christians for centuries as a time of preparation for Easter. Its key features include:
Repentance and Reflection: A time for self-examination, confession, and spiritual renewal.
Fasting and Abstinence: Echoing Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness, fasting and giving up certain habits or foods are common practices.
Prayer and Almsgiving: Deepening prayer life and extending generosity to those in need are central Lenten disciplines.
Lent's 40 days also connect us to key biblical moments of preparation and testing, such as Jesus’ wilderness fast, Moses’ time on Mount Sinai, and Elijah’s journey to Mount Horeb.
The season progresses through:
Ash Wednesday: A call to repentance marked by the symbol of ashes.
Holy Week: From Palm Sunday to Good Friday, culminating in the anticipation of Easter joy on Holy Saturday.
Lent is a time to confront sin, embrace renewal, and prepare our hearts to fully celebrate the hope of the resurrection.
